Antique hand crafted and hand painted CAPODIMONTE porcelain sculptural figurine.
The cherub is playing music while sitting on what appears to be a floral gondola. The lid that the cherub is stting on has 5 holes in it.
This piece could have been intended to be a lidded trinket dish. But, my personal opinion is that, based on the 5 holes, it was perhaps designed as an ornate floral frog.
The underside is incised with a capital N inside a circle. When the Capodimonte workshop moved from Madrid to Naples in the early 1800s, the earlier fleur-de-lys motif was replaced with the letter N, signifying Naples. Various forms of this N has been used ever since as the maker's mark.
Overall, this rare piece is in good vintage condition. As expected, there are a few clipped floral petals. But, they are non-distracting and do not detract from the beauty of this piece.
It measures 21 cm wide, 12.5 cm tall and 9 cm deep, weighing about 500 grams unpacked.
