Rare vintage Royal Doulton Series Ware porcelain plate with handles from the 'North American Indian' series, depicting a striking portrait of the fictional character Hiawatha from Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha.
It is 24 cm long, 28 cm wide with the handles, and 3 cm tall, weighing about 550 grams unpacked.
The plate is in very good vintage condition without any chips, cracks or repairs. There are no visible signs of crazing.
The backside has the standard Royal Doulton mark of the 'Lion and Crown' over an interlocking 'D' roundel. The inclusion of the 'Made in England' in a circular arrangement around the roundel indicates that this piece was likely produced between 1930s and 1993.
The specific 'D' in the pattern number D5965 was introduced in 1899 and the D series ran until the early 1960s. The incised number 1038 on the back is the shape/mold number that was used by the factory to identify the physical form of the piece before it was decorated.
