Hand-thrown, large studio art pottery serving basin created by the Canadian ceramic artist Saundra Reiner, based out of Ontario. The heavy stoneware body features an incised signature and studio production tracking code on the bottom base.
The design utilizes a wide, structurally thick, twisted-rope patterned rim decorated in underglaze cobalt blue brushwork against a cream-white background slip.
The interior bowl is hand-painted and divided into four distinct panels depicting stylized folk art herons or aquatic birds resting among marsh branches, all surrounding a central multi-petaled rosette medallion. The exterior of the bowl is wrapped in a continuous pattern of freehand, broad-brushed blue leaves.
It is 10.5 cm tall, 26 cm wide and 26 cm deep, weighing slightly over 1 kg unpacked.
The bowl is in very good vintage condition with a glossy, smooth interior glaze surface. It has no cracks, repairs, kitchen utensil scratches, or post-production chips.
As a handmade, kiln-fired artisan item, it features a singular, natural kiln characteristic: a small glaze pop-out/crawl spot located on the neck of one of the hand-painted birds (visible in the close-up listing photos). This occurred when a trace iron particle native to the raw clay reacted during the high-heat firing process, exposing a tiny speck of toasted orange-brown clay. It is an inherent part of the studio firing process and is not a chip or post-firing defect.
