Vintage 1970s hand-carved walking polar bear figurine from Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada) by Grenfell Handicrafts (The International Grenfell Association), made of natural yellow serpentine stone that is often called 'butter soapstone'.
It is 6 cm tall, 13 cm wide and 5 cm deep, weighing about 500 grams unpacked.
This rare polar bear carving was handmade through the famous Grenfell Mission (Grenfell Handicrafts) cooperative in Newfoundland and Labrador. While mass-market vintage soapstone carvings are typically gray, Grenfell artisans frequently sourced a beautiful, distinct local translucent yellow-green serpentine stone. The piece captures a stunning, naturalistic low-slung walking and hunting posture. The original paper label remains firmly attached to the underside of the paw, reading: "GRENFELL Hand Made in NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR."
Overall, it is in very good vintage condition. The original paper label is fully intact and legible. As is typical with authentic, soft vintage stone carvings, there is minor cosmetic surface wear. There are a few tiny white "flea bite" dings/scuffs on the stone's surface, most notably a small speck right at the tip of the nose and a couple of minor specks on the back (please review the close-up photos carefully). The carving has no structural cracks, major breaks, or repairs.
