"Tears of a Clown" Matched Portrait Pair by Judie – Peak 1970s Kitsch Mastery!
Matching pair of hobo circus clown oil portraits that capture the classic theatrical duality of the tragicomic clown. One canvas depicts a melancholic, downcast sad clown with deep downcast eyes, a heavy blue collar ruffle, and a prominent orange bow tie. The companion canvas answers it with a content, gently smiling clown adorned with an orange bowler hat and a heavily textured flower.
Each painting is 54 cm tall, 44 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep, weighing slightly over 1 kg unpacked.
Artistic Highlights & Details:
Impasto Texture: The artist utilized a thick, sculptural impasto oil to bring three-dimensional texture to the second clown’s curly hair clumps and flower petals.
Cohesive Palette: Both pieces have an identical retro color scheme—built heavily around vibrant mid-century oranges, charcoal grays, slate blues, and bold black outlines.
Original Matching Frames: Housed in their original, identical tiered solid dark wood frames. Each frame features an inner gold-gilt fillet trim line that elegantly isolates the canvas boards.
Very good vintage condition with beautiful color stability. The wood frames show some surface scratches and minor scuffs consistent with age. The original paper backing tape on the reverse of the frames has become slightly loose over time, but the canvas boards remain held in place by their original framing points. They can easily be re-taped to tighten the boards in place.
