Vintage 1960s Melior San Marino Sgraffito Girl Vase – Shape 231A (22cm)
Rare 1960s handcrafted fat lava glaze vase by the renowned Melior studios in Italy, beautifully blending elegant portraiture with rugged, industrial atomic design.
The front of the vase features an exquisite, hand-carved Sgraffito medallion depicting a stylized mid-century woman. She is elegantly rendered with long flowing hair, a vibrant blue headband, and two delicately hand-painted yellow roses. The smooth, glossy crimson-red backdrop offers a spectacular visual contrast to the rest of the body.
The sides and reverse are enveloped in a heavy, encrusted Smalto Roccia (rock enamel) or "Fat Lava" glaze. This volcanic, heavily cratered black-and-white frothy texture is highly tactile and creates a wonderful, unexpected surprise when rotated on display.
The base features a glossy black finish with the crisp, hand-painted white maker marks: "231A / MELIOR / ITALY". The "A" suffix specifically denotes this desirable 22cm cabinet size.
22cm (H) x 7.5 cm (W) x 7.5 cm (D)
Very good vintage condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or major paint loss. The delicate, textured volcanic bubbles remain crisp and well-preserved. Hand-painted detailing is bright and clear.
