Vintage Australian Studio Pottery Charger by Wendy Wishart – Balingup, Western Australia
This stunning, large-scale ceramic art charger is a verified piece of mid-to-late 20th-century Australian studio pottery crafted by renowned West Australian ceramicist Wendy Wishart. Operating out of the historic Old Cheese Factory Craft Centre in Balingup, Wishart's work is celebrated for its masterful blend of organic themes and heavily tactile, contrasting surface treatments.
It is 30 cm in diameter, weighing about 1.2 kg unpacked.
The face of this wheel-thrown platter beautifully balances two distinct textures. The left side showcases smooth, concentric throwing rings under a warm, orange-tinted wash decorated with a hand-painted iron-oxide botanical motif of bamboo shoots and leaves. The right side features a masterfully executed, heavily textured "crawl" or "lichen" glaze, where the glaze intentionally beads up during firing to reveal the raw clay body underneath. This striking contrast makes it a perfect statement piece for Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, or Mid-Century Modern interiors.
Markings & Authenticity:
The unglazed base features Wishart’s authentic, hand-incised cursive signature, reading simply "Wishart"—a documented marking variation cataloged by the Australian Potters' Marks registry.
Very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or post-firing damage. The raw, exposed areas are part of the artist's intentional crawl-glaze design. Please note there is a small, smooth, original factory glaze skip on the outer rim edge where the glaze pulled back during the high-heat firing process. This is an inherent part of the handmade artisan process and not post-production damage, as shown in the close-up photos.
