Vintage Mexican lapidary folk art bust depicting a Mayan or Aztec warrior deity.
Hand-carved from heavy, highly polished natural black obsidian volcanic glass, this 16.5 cm (approx. 6.5 inches) figurine balances bold geometric lines with meticulous craftsmanship.
It is 16.5 cm tall, 11.5 cm wide and 7 cm deep, weighing about 1 kg unpacked.
The stepped headdress and large earspools feature detailed mosaic inlays made from vibrant, iridescent abalone shell and luminous white mother-of-pearl that catch the light beautifully.
CONDITION:
This piece is in very good vintage condition. The colors are vibrant and the base is balanced. There is a prominent, naturally occurring white circular mineral inclusion (cristobalite cluster) on the corner facet of the plinth base. This is an inherent, organic characteristic of raw volcanic glass that was ground and polished completely smooth and flush by the artisan, serving as an excellent proof of authenticity. The shell inlay is beautifully intact.
